Uruguay

Here's a few photos from a short trip I took to Uruguay. It was great to see John and Luciana - the best hosts ever. Sorry I missed Luisa and the boys!

The first photo (if the blog software doesn't mess with the order...) is John's new house in Punta del Este where I stayed for a couple nights.

The second photo is John & Luciana in their apartment in Montevideo.

Next, John and I went for a bike ride in Punta.

Last, is the beach in front of the Punta house.

All in all, I was quite impressed with Uruguay!

Sandy Stream Trip

Monique, Andrew, James, Emmaline & I went up to the camps this past week-end. Still a little snow up there - a fair amount of mud. The stream was high (1st photo). Not too many bugs, just a few disoriented mosquitos.

Monique and I put a screen over our bunk the second night and left the kids to fend for themselves (i.e. bait). Justice was served though because nothing bothered the kids that night and somehow we got attacked by a couple mosquitos - don't know how they got past our defenses.

The second photo was taken down by Cyr's camp.

On our way out of the woods we hit a pot-hole too hard and something snapped. There was a thump, thump, thump noise that shook the car, coming from the vicinity of the drive shaft. I couldn't see what was broken.

We were almost out of the woods when it happened but it was Sunday (everything closed) and no rental car facility within 100 miles. We managed to limp the car towards town at like 2 mph and happened to find a guy who works on cars and had just gotten back into town. He jacked up the car and noticed the emergency brake cables had come loose and were interfering with the drive shaft. He used a couple plastic ties to get them out of the way and all was well!

We were imagining major damage and being stranded in Millinocket and we escaped in less than 1/2 hour, only requiring a couple plastic ties! Yea!

All-in-all a good trip.

Talent is overrated, by Geoff Colvin

I thought I was buying the Outliers book but somehow ended up with this one... Seems to be similar sort of arguments. Essentially people aren't born with talent...anyone can be a top performer... it mostly requires a minimum level of intelligence and enormous amount of "deliberate practice". Starting early in life gives many an advantage that others cannot compete with as ability to devote oneself diminishes later in life due to other responsibilities

Many people spend an enormous amount of time on particular jobs or interests but don't improve much because they don't conduct deliberate practice. Deliberate practice is characterized by several elements:

1. it is an activity specifically designed to improve performance, often with a teachers help;
2. it can be repeated a lot;
3. feedback on results is continuously available;
4. it is highly demanding mentally, whether the activity is intellectual (chess) or physical such as sports;
5. It isn't much fun.

Another element necessary for top performance is to have an extensive body of knowledge of the chosen field. They tell the story of a family of top chess players with a library of 10,000 chess books.

The book later deviates to a discussion of innovation and finally ends with motivational issues as to how one becomes motivated enough to make the enormous effort required to be a top performer today. He also notes that many top performers also suffer in many other aspects of their life. There is no free lunch.

So supposedly through deliberate practice anyone can improve their performance even if they don't want to make the commitment to be a top performer...though they could or at least their younger children could be top performers. An interesting easy read...

Master Sign Makers
Jeff and Monique and family were fast approaching the East coast of the U.S., travelling at high speed, aimed for their home on Sprucewood Drive in Gilford, NH. All their belongings were in a big truck, headed for the same place.
Gran said, "We need a sign!"
Gramps printed out some letters on a big piece of paper, but Gran said, "That's not a good sign!"
Then Sophie, Margaret and Annika got out their markers and went to work. Each letter got an original pattern of happy color. Embellishments were added. Everyone signed it.
Gran said, "That's a great sign!"
Everyone was happy. When Jeff, Monique, Andrew, James, Emmaline and Elliot arrived, they saw the sign and were happy, too.

St. Patrick's Day Parade - South Boston 3/15

Last Sunday I trooped the St. Pat's parade in South Boston with the rest of the New England Garrison of the 501st Legion. I was dressed as a Tusken Raider (the tan guy down in front), which is an easier costume to wear when walking farther than 50 feet - though visibility is an issue! We were joined by members of our Rebel sister group, Alderaan Base, and Legion members from Canada, New York, and Pennsylvania. We had over 50 marchers and the parade was watched by an estimated 600,000 people! Here are a few photos from the event, and you can see more here, and a short YouTube video of us here. I came away from the parade with one blister, sore legs, and some great memories!

Captain Rex taking a break from working the crowd.
Boba Fett and Vader. The guy doing Vader that day is 6'11 - he's huge!
Chip just had a baby, so that's him holding his new apprentice, I mean, his 3 mo. old.
We even had R2 and C-3PO!

Photos from Adrian

Here's some photos we got from Adrian on his mission - spiced up by me with a couple quotes from the movie Nacho Libre...

1) Adrian going into the Missionary Training Center in Provo on February 4th.

From Nacho Libre... "The brothers don't think I know a butt-load of crap about the gospel.... but I doooooo".

2) We don't know what Adrian's doing here. Having fun I suppose.

From Nacho Libre... "If I win at the battle jam tonight maybe that means God wants me to be his warrior missionary".

3) Adrian with his new buddies.

From Nacho Libre... "Steven, why have you never been baptized?"

"I never got around to it, ok?"

4) Adrian's currently in Umatilla, Oregon near the Columbia River.

Ok, I've run out of quotes...

5) Adrian gets a sweet new bike.
